HOW TO START A MONEY MAKING BLOG FROM SCRATCH
First things first.
Step 1: You Need A Blog
If you don’t have a blog already; you need one. You can check out my post on how to start a blog from scratch with WordPress. If you plan on monetizing your blog, WordPress is my number one choice as it will help you to get up and running quickly. Once you have a blog setup, you’ll want to continue on to Step
Step 2: Find Your Niche
Having a niche is very important if you plan on making money from blogging. Maybe your blog is about training dogs or knitting. Maybe you’ll blog about beauty products or fashion. Whatever the case may be, you’ll need to choose a niche to help you speak to a targeted audience.
You might be thinking, “what if I don’t have a niche, how do I choose one?”
Here is a list of different profitable blogging niche ideas that can get you started:
- Start A Mom Blog
- Sewing and Crafts
- Work From Home Jobs
- Social Media Tips
- Family and Home
These blogging niche ideas are surefire ways to help you to go on and create a profitable blog from scratch. Once you have an idea, stick with it and build out content.
Do I Need A Ton Of Content When Starting My Blog?
Absolutely not! When I first started my blog, I published it with only having around 5 blog posts written. You don’t need to have a lot of posts in order to start your blog or to make money.
What you do need to have is a well-written, high quality article. You might be asking, “well how do I do that?”
You first need to research other bloggers in your niche and see what they are doing.
- Are their blog posts well-written?
- About how long are their blog posts?
- What types of topics do they talk about?
Once you have an idea of the type of blog post you are going to write with your research from other bloggers in your niche, start coming up with your own similar ideas and start writing your post.
This leads us into the next step of the process.
Step 3: Add Some Content
A blog is not a blog without content. You need content to attract an audience, build an audience and grow revenue from your audience. Make sure your content is relevant to your niche and also catches your audience’s attention. You may want to include videos, infographics or pictures to ensure your audience is engaged. You need to make sure your blog content is SEO-friendly and capturing someone’s attention.
What is SEO you ask?
Good question. We’ll talk about that next.
SEO is Search Engine Optimization. It simply means it is a way for search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo! To find your relevant content. You need SEO in order to rank high in the SERPS (Google, Bing, Yahoo!) in order for people who are searching for your topic to find you.
How Long Does It Take To Rank in Google with SEO?
That all depends. It depends on one of two factors:
- How much money you have
- How much time you have
As a new blogger starting out, a lot of people may not have a lot of money to invest in Google ads to rank high for keywords. If you do, this is the quickest way to rank high and get found on Google. With a large budget, the sky is the limit to getting people to come to your website, depending on your niche and how much you want to spend.
If you don’t have an unlimited budget for ads, the second step is most feasible – time.
You will have to rank organically for keywords, which means a lot of manual work. It will take time. Anywhere from 3 months onwards to rank for certain keywords.
In an oversaturated niche, certain keywords can take YEARS to tank high for, so make sure you are ranking for relevant keywords in your niche but keywords that your competitors aren’t clamoring over.
SEO can be a complicated matter if you don’t know what you’re doing. When I first started blogging, I used services such as Fiverr and Upwork to contract work out to freelancers to do the work for me. If you have a small budget and you’re looking for help with SEO, you can check out freelancers on Fiverr and Upwork.
If you’d rather do it yourself, my best piece of advice is to check out Neil Patel’s video on SEO. It is AMAZING and will help you get started with SEO.
You should always have SEO-friendly content in every single blog post. This ensures that your content is crawled by the search engines and people who are searching for related topics to your blog posts are able to find you.
Step 4: Grow Your List
This is probably my favorite part of blogging; growing a list. The money is in the list. What is a list and why do you need one you say? A list is a group of email subscribers who come to your blog and sign up to learn more about what you have to offer. See my example below. For my blog, I have at least 3 places on each page where I can capture a lead (an email address) from someone who comes to visit my blog.
I capture their email address by offering them something that they want. It may be learning how to start a blog from scratch or ways to earn money from home or learning how to write an ebook. Whatever the case is, I make sure that I include lead captures on all of my pages.
They are relevant to my blog and are topics I am an expert in. I give away freebies and I teach free courses. And I do this because I want to help someone to better themselves and I love teaching. Also I love to help others make money online and I have knowledge that I like to share. Once someone is interested enough in my blog and wants to learn more, they sign up for one of my freebies. In exchange for their email address, I give them free information of some sort.
How To Get Subscribers To Your List
Depending on the type of blog you wish to create, you should create an email list. You can sign-up through Aweber or MailChimp. MailChimp is a great place to sign-up if you’re a beginner or have a list of 2,000 or less subscribers. They offer a free service. As your list grows, they offer affordable pricing for you to send emails and campaigns to your list.
In case you need free lead capture forms, SumoMe offers a slew of great products for free. If you want the added features, they offer they for a fee, which will help you grow your list and create custom lead forms.
By the way, you will need a lead capture form to attract email subscribers. It’s best practice to include one at the top of your page, in the middle of your blog post and at the bottom of each page. This ensures that you are capturing email addresses from visitors from your site.

Step 5: Create Products Or Sell Someone Else’s
Now that you have your blog, content, and email list growing, let’s talk about making money. There are several ways to make money blogging and all of them are very lucrative. There are bloggers earning six figures a year and more just by blogging. So can you. Here are the ways to earn money blogging:
- Affiliate Marketing
- Selling Your Own Products/Services
- Selling Someone Else’s Products/Services
If you’re brand new with blogging, a quick-start to getting cash flow is to start with affiliate marketing. It will take time to get up and running, however, it is a very lucrative source of income for blogging. Affiliate marketing is when you advertise and promote other services and products for companies. There are tons of sites which provide affiliate marketing offers that are niche-specific and range in an array of different categories.
