Welcome to your first lesson in growing your very own email list! (List Growth) Let’s get down to the basics:
Why do you need an email list?
An email list is a must-have for any business.
List Growth: You need a way to connect with your customers directly. eBay, Amazon and other platforms may not be around forever. Companies are being acquired everyday. Most of all, these platforms hold the key to your ultimate success; your customer’s email address.
Ever shopped on Amazon or eBay and tried to email the seller directly? Think about it…you can’t. You can only communicate to the seller (or if you’re a seller, to the buyer) through eBay’s or Amazon’s platform. Email addresses are hidden.
There’s a reason for that; they want to email your customers directly to shop on their platform. There is no way for a customer to reach out to you directly through a personal email address.
So, to prevent this from happening, you create a list.
Once upon a time, I sold items on eBay and Amazon and other retail platforms. I did well, however, I had no customer base. I sold over 4,000 products on one platform and was never able to collect a single email address.
Then it hit me, I needed my own platform.
So, I created my own website and sold my products on my own terms. This allowed me to collect email addresses and have a way to connect with my own customers.
No matter what business you’re in, you need a website and you need a way to collect email addresses.
So, let me ask you; do you have a website?
List Growth Step 1: Create a Website & Hosting Platform
If you don’t have one already, you can follow the steps laid out here and create a website. I recommend using Bluehost to host your website (which means a place on the internet to park your website; think of it as a strip mall where a store owner pays rent to the landlord to lease a space….same scenario here except it’s virtual).
I also recommend WordPress to create your website (if you ever want to make money with your website, WordPress is the way to go. I’ve tried many, many other sites and WordPress will save you headaches and trouble).
It’s important to complete these steps first before moving forward if you haven’t already. You need to have a platform to create a list. What’s a platform, you ask? Your website which will allow you to collect email addresses from your potential customers.
List Growth Step 2: Create The Layout Of Your Website
If you already have a website, you can skip to Step 3. If you chose WordPress to create a website, which I recommended (you get a free domain name if you sign up through Bluehost and they offer a 1-click install for WordPress), you can select one of their many free themes to setup your website.
WordPress makes it super simple and easy to setup a website in no time. Once you have this step done, let’s move on to Step 3.
List Growth Step 3: Selecting An Email Subscription Service
Here comes the fun part. You get to choose a subscription service for your email list. I recommend Aweber or MailChimp. MailChimp is user friendly and offers a free service if you have less than 2,000 email subscribers. Aweber has cool features as well and offers a 30-day free trial.
You need to sign up for a subscription service so that you’re able to email your list once you begin collecting email addresses.
Take some time to research which email subscription service is best for you.
That’s all for today. Tomorrow we’ll talk about ways to capture email addresses from your website.
