Fashion fanatics have a tendency to compile wish lists for all eventualities. Recently, those lists have been dominated by Bottega Veneta – and rightfully so. After Matthieu Blazy’s AW22 debut as creative director earlier this year, all eyes are once again on the brand known for its signature intrecciato woven leather.
Show-goers were swooning over denim looks made entirely from leather, sumptuous silhouettes – a particular preoccupation for Blazy – and fringed underskirts. Fast forward to September, and the same held true for his SS23 runway presentation, which was graced by supermodel Kate Moss, seemingly in the simplest of looks – denim and a plaid shirt – but these, too, were made from leather.
While the look’s deceiving simplicity demanded the audience’s attention, it was the accessories that encouraged closer inspection. From buckled skyscraper platform heels to the new Sardine bag – already endorsed by celebrities like Kendall Jenner – the designs were an easy sell for any accessory lover.
Why? Because there’s a point of difference in Blazy’s take on fashion that hits the sweet spot with consumers. His CV lists experience at some of the fashion industry’s greatest houses – Balenciaga, Raf Simons, Calvin Klein, Celine, Maison Margiela Artisanal – and his work reads best between the lines. In other words, it’s all about subdued elegance without having to spell it out.
His winning streak has continued with the now released resort 2023 collection, with many pieces already sitting in the shopping baskets of fashion editors. Take the white wedge-heel knee-high boots for example, or the snake-embossed leather platform heels – already tipped to be the most coveted shoes of the season. The jewellery, of course, is also worth taking note of: twisted plinth earrings, a gold necklace reminiscent of a snake skeleton, or the juxtaposition between silver and stone – all are satisfyingly eye-catching.
Last, but definitely not least, come the bags, which are making a defiant statement: from gargantuan tote bags with metal handles, box-shaped styles and woven bucket bags, they have all jumped to pole position on our wish lists.
